When you installed your Network Interface Card (NIC) in your PC, Windows 2000 will have detected and configured it for you. In order for you to be able to connect to the network, you need to enter the correct TCP/IP settings on your computer. You can usually do this for yourself but you must contact the Helpdesk to confirm the TCP/IP settings and to be given the correct hostname for your computer.
System Control Panel
You need to change the Network Identification of your PC from the default name to the correct hostname.
From the Start menu choose Settings and then Control Panel
Double-click on System
In the System Properties dialog-box click the Network Identification tab
Click the Properties button
In the box labelled "Computer name" type the host name that you decided upon, for example aapc-mmm45
In the box labelled "Workgroup" you have to type something: unless you expect to make use of workgroup networking, it doesn't really matter what you type here.
Click OK and OK again
Network and Dialup Connections Control Panel
From the Start menu choose Settings and then Network and Dialup Connections
Double-click on Local Area Connection
If the "Local Area Connection" icon is not present in the "Network and Dialup Connections" window it probably means that your Network Interface Card has not been properly installed
A dialog-box similar to the one shown below will open.
